  • My “No Spend” Challenge

    Updated July 1, 2023

Several of you have asked how it’s going with the no spend challenge. Honestly, it was not difficult. There were a couple of times I found myself thinking, “I need to get this,” or “I’ll just order that now,” and what I realized is that I have everything I need. I have just been in the habit of buying things I want without giving it much thought. So, for this reason, the no spend challenge has been an enlightening experience for me. Many of those things I thought I wanted, have been forgotten already.

Another positive benefit was that our charitable contributions also increased in the month of June. We looked around our new community to see where we could help make a difference in the lives of others and found a local food pantry to assist. That felt great and it will become a new habit for us.

I was also able to use up many of the items in our pantry and make fewer trips to the grocery store. All-in-all, it was a good experience. If I try it again, it will be for 90 days. Perhaps 30 days just isn’t long enough!

No spend challenge, give it away

Are you tired of constantly spending money? Perhaps it’s time to take a stand and declare, “I’m not buying anything this month.” I’ve been thinking about this for a couple of weeks now and I’m ready to give it a try.

Today is June 1st so let’s see if we really have all that we need. Feel free to join me and say goodbye to unconscious spending and hello to a life with more purpose and focus. Are you up for the challenge?

Set Clear Rules and Goals for Spending

Before starting our no-buy challenge, we have to set some clear rules and goals. Decide what you’re allowed to buy (if anything), and what you’re not allowed to buy. For example, you may allow yourself to buy groceries and essentials, but not clothing or electronics.

After careful consultation with Dave, here’s my list of things to spend money on this month:

    • Fresh produce (this is a must have for me)
    • Appointments and trips previously scheduled
    • Regular monthly donations
    • Any and all social events and gatherings which come up

It’s also helpful to set goals for yourself. Maybe you want to save a certain amount of money or reduce your waste by not buying specific goods. Having a clear purpose will help you stay motivated and focused.

My goal is to use what I have in my pantry, refrigerator, and freezer in order to reduce waste. Who knows, perhaps we can continue this for more that one month!

Get Creative with What You Already Have

One of the most rewarding aspects of a no-buy challenge is discovering what you already have. Instead of buying new clothes, try mixing and matching what you already own in new ways. Instead of buying new home furnishings, try rearranging the items you already have.

You can also get creative with food by using up ingredients you already have on hand. Challenge yourself to make a meal using only what’s in your pantry and fridge. Remember, not buying anything doesn’t have to be a punishment. It can be a fun and rewarding challenge that helps you appreciate what you already have.

The Benefits of Not Buying Anything

Have you ever felt like your spending habits are on auto pilot? Do you often find yourself buying things you don’t really need or want? Consider taking a break from spending and reaping these benefits of not buying anything.

    Being More Mindful

When you stop the constant cycle of buying, you can start to become more mindful of your spending habits. You may start to ask yourself questions like “Do I really need this?” or “Will this bring me long-lasting happiness?” This increased awareness can also lead to a greater appreciation for the things you already have.

    Reducing Clutter

Not buying anything can also help you reduce clutter in your life. When you limit your purchases to only what you truly need or want, you’ll find that your home and workspace become less cluttered. This can lead to a more peaceful and organized environment, which can have a positive impact on your overall well-being.

    Saving Money

One of the most obvious benefits of not buying anything is the amount of money you can save. By cutting out unnecessary purchases, you can put that money toward saving for something important or paying off debt. You may also find that you have more money at the end of the month to put toward experiences or items that truly bring you joy.

    Dealing with Temptation

When you decide to go on a no spend challenge, it’s important to be prepared to deal with the temptation that comes with it. Here are some tips to help you stay on track:

    Avoiding Stores and Shopping Websites

The easiest way to avoid temptation is to stay away from stores and shopping websites. If you don’t see something you want, you’re less likely to buy it. Unsubscribe from store emails and delete shopping apps from your phone if that helps. If you need to go to a store, make a list of what you need and stick to it. Don’t browse or wander around the store to see what may be on sale.

Finding Support from Friends and Family

When you’re trying to change your habits, it can be helpful to have support from those around you. Talk to your friends and family about your shopping ban and ask for their support. They can help keep you accountable and offer encouragement when you’re feeling tempted. You can also find support online through forums or social media groups dedicated to shopping bans or minimalist lifestyles.

    Reminding Yourself of Your Goals

When you’re feeling tempted to buy something, remind yourself of why you started your no spend ban in the first place. Maybe you’re saving money for a trip or trying to declutter your home. Whatever your goals are, keep them in mind when temptation strikes.

The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.” – Henry David Thoreau

Making the decision not to buy anything for a month can be a great way to challenge yourself and save money. By setting this goal, you can become more aware of your spending habits and make intentional choices about what you really need versus what you want.

It’s important to remember that this doesn’t have to be a permanent change, but rather a way to reset your mindset and develop healthier financial habits. Additionally, taking a break from consumerism can have positive impacts on the environment and your overall well-being.

So, if you’re up for the challenge, give it a try with me this month and see how it can benefit you in the long run. Remember, it’s not about depriving yourself, but rather making more thoughtful purchases and appreciating what you already have.
